Release time:2018-08-17 Views:670
Time: July 13th-16th 2018
Location: Kampung Orang Asli Serendah, Selangor, Malaysia
Currently, there are more than 12,000 Orang Asli families in Malaysia are in need of housing aids. And, many of them still live in dilapidated shelters and poor housing conditions. Usually with three to four Children in one family, these kids’ growth environment are raising great concerns in the society. Our business partner Oleon has collaborated with EPIC Homes, which stands for “Extraordinary People Impacting Community” is an initiative by a non-profit social organization to bring changes in improving the lives of Orang Asli ( Malaysia indigenous people) in Malaysia, to build homes for Orang Asli family. Thanks for Oleon’s invitation, we are very proud to become one of the sponsors of this event and get full participation into this meaningful activity. This year, it attracts not only business associates from overseas to join in the event., but also high school students from Kuala Lumpur International School. With over 70 volunteers’ hard work and effort, we complete two homes in 3 day time.
13th, July, 2018 Technical Training
For the first time participators, we go to a local training center which provides some basic instructions on how to use different tools. Every group has to make a small stool by team cooperation. To make a stool from a piece of paper, you need to do a very accurate measurement, precise wood cutting, solid nailing technique and surface polishing.
14th, July, 2018 First Building Day
We start for the building site at 6 am, which is located at a remote mountain away from KL center. A professional construction engineer first gives us a safety training lesson and then divided all the volunteers into four construction groups, structure team, floor team, roof team and wall team.
First day building site when we arrived, with only some ground stakes.
Every volunteer is equipped with a builder kit inclusive of safety helmet, tool belt drawstring bag, gloves and disposable raincoat. Everyone is very excited for the upcoming tasks. To be honest, it is not easy for a layman to tell apart so many technical tools, such as different types of electric drills, saws, hammer and nails.
Work in progress with outside temperature 34 ℃. You must wear gloves when you carry the steel plate because it is easy to get scalded or scratched. You should also be careful of the tiny scraps on the wood which can easily cut you fingers.
First day construction ended at 6:30 pm with steel frames completed.
15th, July, 2018 Second Building Day
After one day’s work, everyone becomes familiar with their position and teamwork is more efficient.
Second day working load is much bigger for everyone, roof team start working on the high levels. Scorching sunlight makes everyone soaked with sweat. Floor and wall team’s work is also going on step by step. Everyone works hard in their position. The building site is roared with drilling, sawing and hammering sound.
This is our supply station with plentiful snacks, beverages and fruits. You can take a rest in here or get more sunsreen to prevent from sunburn. As you can see, everyone writes their name on the bottle so we can use only one bottle for three days, which is very environment friendly.
Students from KL bring many young energy and joy to us. Although they may be weak in strength, but they always offer their helping hand when we needed, with a big smile in their face.
Building site after two days’ work. Roof and bottom wood finished. We progress ahead much faster than we expected.
16th, July, 2018 Third Building Day
On the last day, everyone wears the same yellow T-shirt which is made by Oleon. After a quick warm-up, volunteers devote to their work again.
At 4.p.m, construction work of two homes successfully completed. Everyone gathers together and cheers for the coming of recipient family. That is an exciting moment to see the family first step into the house, a brand new home for them in the future.
With volunteers’ hard work and effort, we managed to complete two homes in 3 day time, which breaks EPIC ’s building record in previous years. With the help of this programme, we collaborated in building a new home, bringing new hope and a life-changing solution to the family. This project alsp creates a platform for participants with different backgrounds to build a home together, across boundaries of race, gender, faith, belief and nationality. As representatives from NCMC, we are very happy and honored to get this chance and make our own contributions to local community. NCMC will continue in its endeavour to implements its corporate social responsibility and give back to the society. A group photo of all the volunteers is present here.
